As of March 2024, I was appointed Maryland State Commander in Region VIII of NABVETS. I will manage seven chapters in my region. The Maryland State Commander team will visit each chapter, learn the needs of their community, understand the Commander’s vision, and assist them in making it come true. This is about helping each Commander and Vice-Commander achieve their goals and inspiration.
I am looking forward to this journey with my team for the next two years to see the blessing that the higher power wants us to go. We will travel to engage in outreach to empower our Black community and people of color that we have met and are going to meet.
Note that we want to connect with ALL to show that it takes all of us to work together to make our community the best place to live, so let’s do it together.
I was born and raised in Darlington, Maryland, and served in the Maryland National Guard for over twenty years in the Army. From 2021 to 2024, I was appointed to NAMVETS Region V as a Veteran Service Officer. From 2014 to now, I have been appointed Vice Commander of the NABVETS Chapter #53 and a Veterans Service Officer (VSO). I also do claim clinics for veterans to file their claims to Veterans Affairs (VA). I also do outreach programs to educate our African American veterans on their benefits and entitlements. I am also in charge of membership for the Veterans History Project to ensure their military journey enters the archives in Congress in Washington DC. We also supply Thanksgiving meals and have clothes given away each month. I am partnered with the I’m Still Standing Community Corporation, Inc. Career School and other organizations. Another event I do is “Dress to Impress” students who do not have dress clothing for an interview after they complete the course.

Maryland State Vice Commander, NABVETS
Dr. Xavier Bruce
I've served my country, and now I want to serve my fellow Maryland veterans in a leadership role that makes a tangible difference. That's why I'm excited to serve as the Maryland State Vice Commander.
This isn't just about standing by the Commander's side. It's about being a force for good, a champion for veterans across our state. As Vice Commander, I'll be right in the thick of things, coordinating critical events throughout the year, and working hand-in-hand with local chapters to ensure every Maryland veteran gets the support they deserve. It's a chance to leverage my experience, my leadership skills, and my passion for service to truly make a positive impact.
